What happens in a SoFit Discovery Session?

Starting personal training can feel like a bigger step than it should.

You may be wondering whether you are fit enough to begin, whether a trainer will understand an old injury, or whether your first visit is going to turn into an exhausting workout and a high-pressure sales pitch.

That is exactly why we begin with a free Discovery Session at SoFit Pasadena.

The purpose of this first visit is not to see how hard we can push you. It is to learn where you are now, understand where you want to go, and determine what kind of coaching will realistically fit your body, schedule, and life.

Here is what you can expect.

1. A welcome and a quick tour of the studio

When you arrive at SoFit Pasadena, your coach will welcome you and show you around the studio. You will see where we train, the equipment we use, and the kind of private, focused environment our clients experience.

SoFit is not a large, crowded gym where you are left to figure things out on your own. Our Pasadena location is designed for personal coaching, individual attention, and people who want to feel comfortable while they work toward meaningful goals.

There is no need to know how to use the equipment before you arrive. Teaching you is part of our job.

2. A real conversation about your goals

Next, we sit down and talk.

Your coach will ask what brought you in and what you would like to change. Some people want to lose weight or build muscle. Others want to reduce back discomfort, improve posture, regain strength after time away from exercise, or simply feel more capable in everyday life.

We may also discuss:

Your current exercise routine

Past injuries, surgeries, or areas of discomfort

Work, family, travel, and scheduling demands

Previous fitness experiences—both good and bad

Sleep, stress, nutrition, and recovery habits

What has made consistency difficult in the past

This conversation matters because a plan can look perfect on paper and still fail if it does not fit your real life. We want to understand not only your goal, but also what has been getting in the way.

3. A simple movement assessment

After the conversation, your coach will guide you through a basic movement assessment.

This is not a pass-or-fail test, and you do not need to prepare for it. We are simply looking at how your body currently moves so we can identify strengths, limitations, and areas that may need extra attention.

Depending on your needs, we may look at movements such as squatting, reaching, balancing, hinging, or basic upper- and lower-body patterns. If you have pain or a known limitation, we adjust the assessment accordingly.

The goal is to answer practical questions:

Are there mobility restrictions affecting your form?

Do you need more stability or control in certain positions?

Are you compensating around an old injury?

What exercises are appropriate for you right now?

Where can we begin safely and confidently?

For many clients—especially adults returning to exercise after 40—this step is far more useful than jumping straight into a generic workout.

4. A chance to experience our coaching

Your Discovery Session may include a few light exercises so you can experience how we coach. This is not intended to leave you sore for three days or prove how out of shape you are.

Instead, your coach may help you improve the way a movement feels, show you a more comfortable variation, or teach you how small adjustments in posture and technique can make an exercise safer and more effective.

You should leave with a better understanding of your body—not feeling punished by it.

5. A personalized recommendation

At the end of the session, we review what we learned and explain what we believe would help you most.

That recommendation may include how often to train, whether 30- or 50-minute personal training sessions make the most sense, and what areas we would prioritize first. We may also discuss nutrition, recovery, sleep, stress, and simple habits that support your progress outside the studio.

You will have the opportunity to ask questions and review the available training options. We want you to understand the plan and why we are recommending it.

Do I need to be in shape before I come in?

No. You do not need to lose weight, improve your endurance, or “get ready” before meeting with us.

The Discovery Session is designed to meet you at your current starting point. We regularly work with beginners, people returning after a long break, adults managing aches or previous injuries, and busy people who have struggled to stay consistent.

What should I wear?

Wear comfortable clothes and athletic shoes that allow you to move easily. Because the movement portion is controlled and personalized, you do not need to arrive dressed for an intense workout.

If you have information about a past injury or medical restriction that would help your coach understand your situation, feel free to bring it. If you are under medical care or have been advised to avoid exercise, speak with your healthcare provider before beginning a new program.

Will I be pressured to sign up?

Our job is to determine whether SoFit is a good fit for you and whether we can help.

We will explain the training option we recommend and answer your questions clearly. If you decide to move forward, we can discuss the next steps. If you need time to think, you will still leave with a clearer understanding of your goals, movement, and possible path forward.

Your first session should give you clarity

A good first personal training session should not be confusing or intimidating. It should help you feel understood.

At SoFit Pasadena, your Discovery Session gives us the information we need to build a plan around you—not around a generic template. You will see the studio, meet your coach, discuss your goals, complete a simple movement assessment, and leave knowing what your next step could look like.

If you have been waiting to feel more ready, this is your reminder: you do not have to get in shape before asking for help.
